Used when welding pipe, backing rings (sometimes known as chill rings) serve as support structures behind the weld joint. Their primary purpose is to provide a clean, uniform weld on both the inside and outside of the pipe. This reinforcement helps prevent issues such as burn-through and incomplete penetration during the welding process.
